The following are acceptable identification documents in MA:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Certificate of Naturalization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birth certificate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Armed forces ID cards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Permanent resident card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foreign passport with a valid I-94 (the expiration date of the I-94 must be at least 2 months from the date you visit the office)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of true full-name verification documents include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adoption documents that contain your legal name as a result of the adoption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marriage certificate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name change documents containing your legal name both before and after the name change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certificate of Registration document that verifies the formation of a domestic partnership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dissolution of marriage document that contains your legal name as a result of the court order<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of acceptable residency documents include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insurance documents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Massachusetts vehicle or vessel title or registration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resident utility bills (this can also include cell phone bills)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A record of a financial institution (bank statement)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-obtaining-a-massachusetts-driver-s-license-under-the-age-of-18-years-old\">Obtaining a Massachusetts Driver\u2019s License Under the Age of 18 Years Old<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are under the age of 18, there are specific rules you must follow when you\u2019re operating a motor vehicle in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-teenage-residents-who-are-new-to-massachusetts\">Teenage Residents Who Are New to Massachusetts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a new teenage resident of Massachusetts who is younger than 16 years old, you are NOT allowed to operate a motor vehicle regardless of whether you have a permit or driver\u2019s license from your previous state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are, however, eligible to convert your out-of-state learner\u2019s permit to an MA permit if the following applies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have a learner\u2019s permit that is less than 2 years old AND was:<ul><li>Issued by a different state<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Issued by Puerto Rico, a U.S. Territory, Canada, or Mexico, AND you present a driving record no more than 30 days old<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NOT labeled \u201climited term\u201d, \u201cdriver privilege only\u201d, \u201ctemporary\u201d, or any other label that the MA RMV can\u2019t find an equivalent for<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are a Massachusetts resident<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do NOT have ANY outstanding parking tickets, toll fines, or excise tax charges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You meet the minimum medical standard for a driver\u2019s license<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your out-of-state Driver\u2019s Education (Driver\u2019s Ed) certificate meets Massachusetts standards (if you are younger than 18 years old and your out-of-state Driver\u2019s Ed certificate does NOT meet MA standards, or you do not have a Driver\u2019s Ed certificate, you will be required to complete an MA Driver\u2019s Ed program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are eligible to convert your learner\u2019s permit, you need to take the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start your application online by clicking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/how-to\/transfer-your-out-of-state-learners-permit-to-massachusetts\">here<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring your required Driver\u2019s License, Learner\u2019s Permit, or ID Card Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/03\/21\/LIC100%20-%20License%20and%20ID%20Application%20-%20Fillable.pdf\">Form LIC-100<\/a>)<ul><li>Your parent or guardian is required to sign the form under parental consent if you are younger than 18<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You need to disclose whether you want a Massachusetts standard permit or a Massachusetts REAL ID permit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit an MA RMV service center with the following required identification:<ul><li>1 document that proves your U.S. citizenship or lawful presence and date of birth, such as your:<ul><li>Certified copy of U.S. birth certificate<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>U.S. passport or passport card<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Proof of your MA residency (these documents differ based on which license you choose (REAL ID \u2013 compliant license or standard license). A standard (non-compliant license requires 1 document. A REAL ID-compliant license requires 2 documents.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>1 document that proves your Social Security number (this document must show all 9 digits of your SSN, which can be your Social Security card or W-2 form.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Payment for the permit application fee of $30<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-massachusetts-graduated-driver-s-licensing-program\">The Massachusetts Graduated Driver\u2019s Licensing Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The MA Graduated Driver\u2019s Licensing (GDL) program was created to minimize the risks that are associated with new teenage drivers. In Massachusetts, their GDL program is called the Junior Operator\u2019s License (JOL) program. This program is overseen by the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under this program, teenagers and new drivers are required to meet specific milestones before obtaining their driver\u2019s licenses. In Massachusetts, you must obtain the following in order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Class D Massachusetts learner\u2019s permit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Junior operator license<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unrestricted Class D driver\u2019s license<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-standard-vs-real-id\">Standard vs. REAL ID<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Massachusetts RMV offers standard and REAL ID-compliant licenses. Both types of driver\u2019s licenses allow you to operate within the restrictions of your permit or license and act as a valid form of identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, because the REAL ID meets federal identification requirements, the REAL ID also features a star emblem to indicate it is a federal form of identification and allows you to board domestic commercial flights and enter federal facilities, including military bases, without being required to show additional proof of identity. Obtaining a REAL ID-compliant is NOT mandatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massachusetts-age-requirements\">Massachusetts Age Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are driver\u2019s license age requirements that determine your eligibility for different driver\u2019s licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>16 years old: Eligible for a Class D permit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>16 \u00bd years old: Eligible for Class D Junior Operator License (JOL)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18 years old: Eligible for a regular Class D driver\u2019s license<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-driver-s-education-in-massachusetts\">Driver\u2019s Education in Massachusetts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You are required to complete a Driver\u2019s Ed course if you\u2019re under the age of 18 and want to obtain a JOL. Your MA state-approved Driver\u2019s Ed course must include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>30 hours of classroom instruction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6 hours of in-car observation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents and legal guardians of teenage drivers are also required to complete 2 hours of Driver\u2019s Ed. This requirement is designed to teach parents and legal guardians how to properly supervise their teenage driver during the additional 40 hours of supervised driving required to obtain a JOL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massachusetts-learner-s-permit\">Massachusetts Learner\u2019s Permit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have heard a lot about the REAL ID and wondering if you need a REAL ID permit. After October 1, 2021, a REAL ID is the only way you can use your license for activities that require you to prove your identity, such as boarding an airplane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you are NOT required to obtain a Massachusetts REAL ID, and if you choose not to obtain a REAL ID, you must have your passport and\/or other federal ID each time you fly. We\u2019ll discuss REAL IDs in more detail later on in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To receive a Massachusetts learner\u2019s permit, you need to be at least 16 years old. To apply, you need to do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Start your application online (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/how-to\/transfer-your-out-of-state-learners-permit-to-massachusetts\">click here<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take your completed Driver\u2019s License, Learner\u2019s Permit, or ID Card Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/03\/21\/LIC100%20-%20License%20and%20ID%20Application%20-%20Fillable.pdf\">Form LIC-100<\/a>). If you are younger than 18 years old, your parent or legal guardian is required to sign the form under parental consent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit an MA RMV service center with the required identification:<ul><li>1 document that shows your U.S. citizenship or lawful presence and date of birth, such as the following:<ul><li>Certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>U.S. passport or passport card<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Proof of MA residency:<ul><li>1 document (required for a non-compliant permit or license<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>2 documents for a REAL ID-compliant permit or license<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1 document that proves your Social Security number (this document must show all 9 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN), which can be either of the following:<ul><li>Social Security card<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>W-2 form<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay the $30 permit exam and application fee<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass the written test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass the vision exam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your learner\u2019s permit will expire after 2 years. If you need to renew your permit, you will be required to retake your written exam and pay the $30 fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants without an SSN must present the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A denial notice from the Social Security Administration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A foreign passport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An appropriate Visa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An I-94 card<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With your learner\u2019s permit, you are required to log 40 hours of supervised driving time with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old. If you complete a driver skills development program, you are only required to log 30 hours of supervised driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massachusetts-driving-restrictions-with-a-class-d-permit\">Massachusetts Driving Restrictions with a Class D Permit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While you have your MA Class D permit, you must follow specific rules, such as the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can ONLY operate a passenger vehicle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must have a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old with you at ALL times<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may NOT drive between the hours of 12 AM and 5 AM (unless you are accompanied by your parent or legal guardian in the front seat next to you)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may NOT drive outside of Massachusetts if that state does not permit teenagers with out-of-state permits to operate a vehicle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massachusetts-junior-operator-license-jol\">Massachusetts Junior Operator License (JOL)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To be eligible to obtain your JOL, you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be 16 \u00bd years old<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have held your learner\u2019s permit for 6 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain a clean driving record for 6 consecutive months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a registrar-approved MA Driver\u2019s Ed program (your parent or guardian must also complete 2 hours of Driver\u2019s Ed instruction unless they have completed it in the last 5 years)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have satisfied the additional 40 hours of supervised driving requirement with a certified statement provided by your parent or guardian (if you have completed a Driver Skill Development program, you only need 30 hours of driving supervised by a parent or guardian)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass the final exam and have your Driver\u2019s Education certificate electronically filed with the MA RMV<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re ready to obtain your JOL, you can schedule a road test over the phone or online. You will be required to provide the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your date of birth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your Social Security number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your learner\u2019s permit number<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you arrive at an MA RMV branch, on the day of your road test, you need to bring the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completed Road Test Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/03\/24\/RDT103%20-%20Class%20D%20or%20M%20Road%20Test%20Application%20-%20Fillable_0.pdf\">RDT-103<\/a>). If you are younger than 18 years old, your parent or guardian is required to complete the consent application.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your learner\u2019s permit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Qualified sponsor unless you are taking a motorcycle road test. The qualified sponsor must meet the following requirements:<ul><li>At least 21 years old<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Minimum of 1 year of driving experience<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have a valid license in their state of residence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Properly equipped and legally registered vehicle to complete the test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payment for:<ul><li>The $35 road test fee<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The $50 license fee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you earned your learner\u2019s permit BEFORE 3\/26\/18, you must provide additional identification documents BEFORE completing your road test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-driving-restrictions-with-a-massachusetts-jol\">Driving Restrictions with a Massachusetts JOL<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While you have your MA JOL, you are allowed to operate a motor vehicle unsupervised during most hours. However, you are still required to abide by the following restrictions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You are NOT allowed to drive between 12 AM and 5 AM unless accompanied by your parent or legal guardian<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the first 6 months, you are NOT allowed to have any passengers who are younger than 18 years old, unless they are your immediate family members<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may NOT operate a vehicle while using a cell phone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unrestricted-massachusetts-driver-s-license\">Unrestricted Massachusetts Driver\u2019s License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you turn 18 years old and have completed the above-listed steps, all restrictions will be lifted from your MA driver\u2019s license and you will be a fully-licensed MA driver. Congratulations! Be advised that you are still required to carry your vertical license. After your 21<sup>st<\/sup> birthday, you can renew your license. You will receive a standard horizontal driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-auto-insurance-requirements-in-massachusetts\">Auto Insurance Requirements in Massachusetts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You are required to obtain auto insurance by law. Auto insurance protects you financially in the event of an accident. Adding a teenage driver can significantly increase the cost of your insurance premium, so you may want to shop around to find the best deal for ample coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learner-s-permit-insurance\">Learner\u2019s Permit Insurance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Teenagers with permits can be covered under their parent\u2019s or guardian\u2019s auto insurance policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-jol-auto-insurance\">JOL Auto Insurance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Teenage drivers with a Junior Operator\u2019s License (JOL) must show proof of auto insurance to receive their license. Parents can add their teenage drivers to their existing family policy, or the teenage driver can obtain their auto coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-licenses-in-massachusetts\">Other Licenses in Massachusetts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Other licenses in Massachusetts are teenage motorcycle\/moped licenses. If you are at least 16 years old, you can obtain a motorcycle permit by passing the MA motorcycle permit written test and paying the $30 written test fee. To receive your motorcycle license, you must already have your Junior Operator\u2019s License (JOL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are also required to do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete a Driver\u2019s License, Learner\u2019s Permit, or ID Card Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/03\/21\/LIC100%20-%20License%20and%20ID%20Application%20-%20Fillable.pdf\">Form LIC-100<\/a>) \u2013 If you are younger than 18 years old, your parent or guardian must sign the form under parental consent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a valid motorcycle permit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete an MA Rider Education Program (MREP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass the motorcycle road test (if you have completed an RMV-approved beginner rider course (MREP), you do NOT have to complete a Class M road test unless you are younger than 18 years old.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay the $35 road test and $15 motorcycle endorsement fees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll discuss more information about obtaining a motorcycle license in Massachusetts later on in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-massachusetts-written-exam-and-road-test\">The Massachusetts Written Exam and Road Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>MA residents must pass the written exam and road test to receive their Massachusetts driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-massachusetts-written-exam\">The Massachusetts Written Exam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Massachusetts written exam consists of 25 questions, 18 of which you must answer correctly to pass with a minimum passing score of 72%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-massachusetts-road-test\">The Massachusetts Road Test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Massachusetts road test is an exam that determines your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. During this exam, you will be asked to perform the following maneuvers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Parking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reversing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using turn signals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adhering to MA traffic laws and road signs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switching lanes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be able to perform more maneuvers to pass the MA road test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-married-divorced-or-name-change\">Married, Divorced, or Name Change?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you recently changed your name? If so, to obtain a new MA REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or identification card in your real true name, you need to provide different documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of identification documents you need to provide that establish your true full name include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A marriage certificate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dissolution of marriage or domestic partnership document that contains the legal name as a result of the court action<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adoption documents that contain the legal names as a result of the adoption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A certificate, declaration, or registration document that verifies the formation of a domestic partnership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A name change document that contains the legal name of both before and after the name change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-the-real-id-act-impact-residents-of-massachusetts\">Does the REAL ID Act Impact Residents of Massachusetts?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) extended the REAL ID full enforcement date from May 3, 2023, to May 7, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting May 7, 20205, every air traveler who is at least 18 years old will need a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or identification (ID) card, or a different TSA-acceptable form of identification for domestic air travel and to enter certain federal facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-obtaining-a-real-id-mandatory-in-massachusetts\">Is Obtaining a REAL ID Mandatory in Massachusetts?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Obtaining a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or ID card is OPTIONAL. If you have valid documents that are accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), you can use these documents to pass TSA checkpoints at airport terminals nationwide and visit a secure federal building or military installation at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you will NOT be boarding a domestic flight or visiting a secure federal facility or military base, you are NOT required to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or ID card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are NOT required to have a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or identification card to perform any of the following actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enter a federal facility that does NOT require ID (such as a post office)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit a hospital to receive life-saving services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Operate a motor vehicle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vote<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply for or receive federal benefits (Social Security Administration (SSA), Veterans Affairs, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-you-prepare-to-apply-for-a-real-id-card-in-massachusetts\">How Do You Prepare to Apply for a REAL ID Card in Massachusetts?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different steps you need to take if you are applying for a REAL ID card in MA. Although these types of ID cards are optional, they are good to have in different situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To successfully apply for a REAL ID card, you need to take the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide proof of your identity (certified birth certificate or passport)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide 2 Massachusetts residency documents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Present proof of your Social Security Number (SSN)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/doc\/ma-real-id-documents-checklist\/download\">here<\/a> to view a list of documents that are accepted for a REAL ID in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-a-commercial-driver-s-license-in-massachusetts\">Applying for a Commercial Driver\u2019s License in Massachusetts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you been wanting to travel the world while driving a commercial vehicle, such as an 18-wheeler? Different cultural wonders characterize the state of Massachusetts and awesome scenic views. If this is your idea of a good time, you will need to apply for an MA commercial driver\u2019s license (CDL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), has different laws and regulations you need to follow to receive your CDL in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-important-federal-training-requirements-update\">Important Federal Training Requirements Update<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Per the new federal entry-level driver training requirements that are effective February 7, 2022, the Massachusetts RMV mandates new CDL applicants complete an entry-level driver training course through an authorized provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must complete this training BEFORE you apply for your initial CDL, upgrade your existing CDL class, or apply for a HAZMAT, school bus, or passenger endorsement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-can-get-a-massachusetts-cdl\">Who Can Get a Massachusetts CDL?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The eligibility requirements for an MA CDL state you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Already have a Class D Massachusetts driver\u2019s license<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be at least 18 years old<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have the proper documentation to prove the following:<ul><li>Date of birth<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Signature<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Massachusetts residency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide a Social Security Number<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be at least 21 years old to operate a commercial vehicle on an interstate basis. All other drivers can ONLY drive intrastate (within Massachusetts).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acceptable Documentation in Massachusetts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to your SSN, you must present documentation that proves your identity when you are applying for your MA CDL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are different examples of each point of identity you must satisfy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Birth date:<ul><li>MA driver\u2019s license<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Valid U.S. passport<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>U.S. birth certificate<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Military ID<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signature<ul><li>Valid U.S. passport<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>MA driver\u2019s license<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Marriage certificate<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social Security Card<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Massachusetts Residency<ul><li>Pay stub from work<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>MA driver\u2019s license<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Cell phone, credit card, or utility bill<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Canceled personal check<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be advised that you can NOT use the same piece of documentation to authenticate multiple items. For example, you can NOT use your MA driver\u2019s license to prove your date of birth and signature. You will need to use your birth certificate to prove your date of birth, and a different document to prove your signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massachusetts-commercial-learner-s-permit\">Massachusetts Commercial Learner\u2019s Permit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step to obtaining your MA CDL is receiving your MA commercial learner\u2019s permit (CLP). When you\u2019re ready to apply for your CLP, you must schedule an appointment with your local RMV branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you head to your appointment, you need to make sure you have the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A completed CDL Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/03\/21\/LIC104%20-%20CDL%20Application%20-%20Fillable.pdf\">Form LIC-104<\/a>), which includes the following:<ul><li>Self-certification<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Medical certificate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proper documentation proving your date of birth, signature, and MA residency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payment for the applicable fees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you arrive at your appointment, you will be required to do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consent to a driving record check that dates back 10 years and covers every location you\u2019ve obtained a driver\u2019s license<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a basic color vision test<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass the written tests that are specific to the classification, endorsement(s), and restriction(s) on your desired MA CDL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Completing a Commercial Driver\u2019s Education (Driver\u2019s Ed) course prepares you for the RMV\u2019s written and behind-the-wheel CDL tests. Once you have passed your written exams and received your CLP, you will be one step closer to obtaining your official MA CDL!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massachusetts-clp-restrictions\">Massachusetts CLP Restrictions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your MA CLP is valid for 180 days. Before you can get out on the open road and start to hone your skills as a commercial driver, you need to make sure that you are familiar with the laws and restrictions surrounding your MA CLP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you are operating a commercial vehicle, you can ONLY drive vehicles that have the same classification as your MA CLP and always be accompanied by a licensed supervisor who attains a CDL with the same classification and endorsement(s) listed on your CLP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can renew your CLP once for an additional 180 days of behind-the-wheel practice. After that, you must reapply for another MA CLP and take the applicable written CDL tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-obtaining-a-massachusetts-cdl\">Obtaining a Massachusetts CDL<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you attain your MA CLP for at least 14 days and you\u2019re ready to complete the RMV\u2019s behind-the-wheel exam, you can call the RMV contact center to schedule a testing appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you leave your home for your appointment, you need to make sure you have the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A completed CDL Road Test Application (Form T21845)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your current:<ul><li>Class D driver\u2019s license<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CDL permit with appropriate endorsement(s)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical certificate or waiver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A sponsor who is at least 21 years old and holds the same CDL as what you\u2019re applying for<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Payment for the $35 road testing fee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The commercial vehicle you are using for the road test must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be of the same classification and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) as your prospective commercial driver\u2019s license allows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass the safety check (no hazardous\/dangerous material onboard)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have valid vehicle registration and proof of Massachusetts auto insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have authorization of permission to use the vehicle (if you\u2019re renting it)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For your CDL road test, you need to be prepared to perform the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pre-trip vehicle inspection (locate and identify the functionality of different vehicle parts inside and out).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Off-street skills test (includes backing up, parallel parking, and docking in an alley)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the road (drive safely on public roads, demonstrating your ability to turn, brake, follow traffic laws, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If this road test seems overwhelming, you can enroll in an MA behind-the-wheel CDL training program that will help you prepare for the skills the RMV expects you to execute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have completed all parts of the RMV\u2019s CDL road test, you will receive your MA CDL. Congratulations! You may now officially begin working and living on the open road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massachusetts-cdl-fees\">Massachusetts CDL Fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The following fees are involved when you are applying for an MA CDL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>General knowledge written exam &#8211; $30<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Written endorsement tests:<ul><li>Taken WITH general written exam &#8211; $10 per test<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Taken AFTER the issue of your learner\u2019s permit:<ul><li>$30 for initial endorsement<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$10 for each additional test taken at the same time as the first<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CDL road test: $35<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-self-certification-and-medical-requirements\">Self-Certification and Medical Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a part of applying for your MA CDL, you must provide the MA RMV with self-certification, and in some situations, a medical certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massachusetts-cdl-self-certification\">Massachusetts CDL Self-Certification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of self-certification is to inform the MA RMV of how you will be operating your commercial vehicle. Once you have your CLP, you must present your completed CDL Self-Certification form (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/03\/22\/LIC103%20-%20CDL%20Self-Certification%20Form_0.pdf\">Form LIC-103<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To complete the Self-Certification form, you need to determine whether you are driving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Non-excepted interstate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excepted interstate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-excepted intrastate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excepted intrastate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-massachusetts-cdl-medical-certificate\">Massachusetts CDL Medical Certificate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You are NOT required to obtain medical certification if the following applies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You plan on operating a federal, state, or municipal commercial vehicle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You plan on operating a commercial vehicle that does NOT exceed 10,000 lbs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All other applicants are required to present a medical certificate when they are applying for their CLP, which means most CDL applicants will be required to obtain medical certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For your medical certificate to be accepted, you need to visit a certified Massachusetts medical examiner who is approved by the FMCSA. You will be examined on the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vision and your ability to distinguish between colors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Risk or onset of diabetes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heart\/cardiovascular health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Missing limbs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing abilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the medical examiner diagnoses you with one of the above but feels you can perform your commercial driver duties, you must submit an Application for Intrastate Medical Waivers to Operate Class A, B, or C Commercial Motor Vehicles (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/03\/21\/MAB105%20-%20Application%20for%20Intrastate%20Medical%20Waivers%20to%20Operate%20Class%20A%20B%20or%20C%20Commercial%20Motor%20Vehicles.pdf\">Form MAB-105<\/a>) to the MA RMV. Submitting a medical waiver allows you to have an intrastate CDL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-a-massachusetts-motorcycle-license\">Applying for a Massachusetts Motorcycle License<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Massachusetts, you must have a Class M permit, Class M license, or Class M endorsement to operate a motorcycle. To apply for your Class M Massachusetts motorcycle license, you must have a valid Class M permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are younger than 18, you can apply for a Class M license if you complete a Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP) course and meet ALL Junior Operator Licensing requirements. To apply, you must be at least 16 \u00bd years old and have your parent\u2019s or guardian\u2019s consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who is applying for a Class M permit or license can NOT have a driver\u2019s license or right to operate a vehicle revoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-residents-of-massachusetts\">New Residents of Massachusetts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a new resident of Massachusetts, you are required to obtain a valid MA license. You can NOT convert a temporary, \u201climited term\u201d, or \u201cdriver privilege\u201d out-of-state license. You can start your MA motorcycle license application online by clicking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/how-to\/transfer-your-out-of-state-drivers-license-to-massachusetts\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must take the following to your local MA RMV full-service office:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your out-of-state driver\u2019s license (you must surrender this license to receive a new one) \u2013 If you are at least 18 years old and do NOT have your out-of-state license, you must have your certified driving record from your state. This record must not be more than 30 days old.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you determine if you are eligible to convert your license, you need to follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take your required Driver\u2019s License, Learner\u2019s Permit, or ID Card Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/03\/21\/LIC100%20-%20License%20and%20ID%20Application%20-%20Fillable.pdf\">Form LIC-100<\/a>) \u2013 if you are younger than 18, your parent or guardian must sign the form under Section H.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit an MA RMV Service Center with the required identification:<ul><li>1 document that proves your U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence, and date of birth, such as a:<ul><li>Certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>U.S. passport or passport card<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1 document that proves your MA residency, such as:<ul><li>Any RMV-issued documentMortgage or lease documents dated within the last 60 daysFederal, state, or municipal-issued documents, such as first-class mailA utility bill, bank, credit card, or medical statement dated within 60 days<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An Alternate Residency Affidavit (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/files\/documents\/2018\/03\/22\/LIC111%20-%20Massachusetts%20Residency%20Individual.pdf\">LIC-111<\/a>) if you are younger than 18 years old.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your parents or legal guardian must sign the form at the RMV in the presence of an RMV representative to have their signature notarized. Your parent or legal guardian must present their MA driver\u2019s license or ID to the notary public or the RMV representative.
