Let\u2019s start with learning about the different Kentucky driver\u2019s license types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-types-of-kentucky-driver-s-licenses\">Types of Kentucky Driver\u2019s Licenses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different types of Kentucky driver\u2019s licenses. We\u2019ll define each type of license to help you determine which type of license you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Class D (non-commercial)<\/strong>: A Class D driver\u2019s license is Kentucky\u2019s standard driver\u2019s license and is also referred to as an operator\u2019s license. Anyone who plans on operating a vehicle that has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating that does NOT exceed 26,000 lbs., carries no more than 16 passengers (including the driver) for personal use, which is a standard car or truck, will need a Class D driver\u2019s license. Also with a Class D driver\u2019s license, you can operate utility vehicles, station wagons, and panel and pickup trucks.<\/li><li><strong>Class E<\/strong>: You can operate moped vehicles with a Class E license. In Kentucky, a moped is considered a small bicycle-type vehicle with an engine displacement of no more than 50cc and a maximum speed of 28 mph.<\/li><li><strong>&nbsp;Class M: <\/strong>A Class M license allows you to operate motorcycles<\/li><li><strong>Commercial Driver\u2019s Licenses (CDL):<\/strong><ul><li><strong>Class A (CDL): <\/strong>a Class A commercial driver\u2019s license is required to operate vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of at least 26,001 lbs. given that the towed vehicle exceeds a weight of 10,000 lbs.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Class B (CDL):<\/strong> a Class B commercial driver\u2019s license is required to operate any straight truck or vehicle that has two or more axles and a GVWR of at least 26,001 lbs., pulling a vehicle that has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or less. This class of commercial driver\u2019s license is also required for a single vehicle that carries 16 or more passengers (including the driver), with a GVWR of at least 26,001 lbs.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Class C (CDL):<\/strong> a Class C commercial driver\u2019s license is required to operate any vehicle that has a GVWR that does not exceed 26,001 lbs., a truck that transports hazardous materials where a placard is required, and any single vehicle that carries 16 or more passengers, including the driver, with a GVWR that does not exceed 26,001 lbs.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kentucky-driver-s-license-requirements\">Kentucky Driver\u2019s License Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To be eligible for a Kentucky driver\u2019s license, you are required to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be at least 16 years old<\/li><li>Have attained a driver\u2019s permit for at least:<ul><li>180 days, if you\u2019re younger than 21 years old<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>30 days, if you\u2019re at least 21 years old<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Be a US citizen or permanent resident<\/li><li>Be a resident of Kentucky<\/li><li>Not currently be suspended from driving in any other state<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-your-kentucky-driver-s-license\">Applying for Your Kentucky Driver\u2019s License<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply for a Kentucky driver\u2019s license, you need to make sure you meet all the eligibility requirements. Once you meet the requirements, you can visit your local circuit clerk\u2019s office and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Submit a completed Driver\u2019s License ID Card Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.ky.gov\/driver-licensing\/Documents\/Driver%20License%20-%20ID%20Card%20Application%20(TC%2094-30).pdf\">Form TC 94-30<\/a>)<\/li><li>Provide proof of your:<ul><li>Name and date of birth (such as your birth certificate, valid US passport, etc.)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Social Security Number (SSN) \u2013 (You must bring your social security card for verification)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Kentucky address (you can contact the Kentucky circuit clerk\u2019s office for a list of accepted documents)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Pass the vision exam<\/li><li>Pass the driving test<\/li><li>Pay the required fee<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-road-test\">Road Test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To complete your Kentucky driving test, you must provide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A registered vehicle<\/li><li>Proof of your valid Kentucky auto insurance policy<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you check with your local KY circuit clerk for driving test schedules to make an appointment. You must demonstrate your ability to drive in traffic and obey all road rules and signs. You must perform basic driving maneuvers, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Hill starts<\/li><li>Backing<\/li><li>Parallel parking<\/li><li>Proper use of lanes<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You must achieve a minimum passing score of 80% on your test to pass. If you are involved in a collision or commit any type of traffic violation, you will automatically fail the test. If you fail the road test, you must wait at least 7 days before you can retake the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-acceptable-identification-documents-in-kentucky\">Acceptable Identification Documents in Kentucky<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the state of Kentucky, there are different types of acceptable identification documents you can use when you\u2019re applying for your KY driver\u2019s license. Identification documents you can use to receive your Kentucky driver\u2019s license can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Birth certificate<\/li><li>Passport<\/li><li>Permanent resident card<\/li><li>Armed forces ID cards<\/li><li>Certificate of Naturalization<\/li><li>Foreign passport with a valid I-94 (the expiration date of the I-94 must be more than two months from the date you visit the office)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of true full-name verification documents can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Adoption documents that contain your legal name as a result of the adoption<\/li><li>Name change documents that contain your legal name both before and after<\/li><li>Marriage certificate<\/li><li>A dissolution of marriage document that contains your legal name as a result of the court order<\/li><li>Certificate of registration document that verifies the formation of a domestic partnership<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of Acceptable residency documents include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Resident utility bills (can include cell phone bills)<\/li><li>Insurance documents<\/li><li>A record of a financial institution<\/li><li>California vehicle or vessel title or registration<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-obtaining-a-kentucky-driver-s-license-under-the-age-of-18-years-old\">Obtaining a Kentucky Driver\u2019s License Under the Age of 18 Years Old<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet uses the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) to help new drivers understand the driving process and their responsibilities as a driver in Kentucky. There are specific rules and requirements for Kentucky drivers who are younger than 18 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin the driver\u2019s license process, you must attend a Driver\u2019s Education course and obtain your Kentucky learner\u2019s permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-residents-of-kentucky\">New Residents of Kentucky<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a new resident of Kentucky under the age of 18, you have 30 days to transfer your out-of-state driver\u2019s license after establishing residency in the state. To receive your Kentucky driver\u2019s license or learner\u2019s permit, you must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>At least 16 years old<\/li><li>A US citizen or permanent resident<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to visit your local KY circuit court clerk and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Present your valid out-of-state driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>If you\u2019re younger than 18 years old, you must submit a School Compliance Verification Form that is signed by your out-of-state school district<\/li><li>You must provide:<ul><li>Proof of your Kentucky residency<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Your non-laminated Social Security Card<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Your birth certificate (if required)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>A copy of your driving record or a clearance letter (if your license has expired for at least 1 year)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Pass the written and vision tests (if your out-of-state license is expired)<\/li><li>Pay the Kentucky driver\u2019s license or permit fee<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are under 18 years old and have an out-of-state driver\u2019s license, you must complete a GLP course UNLESS you have previously completed an equivalent course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kentucky-graduated-driver-s-licensing-program\">Kentucky Graduated Driver\u2019s Licensing Program<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the state of Kentucky, if you are under 18 years old, you are required to complete the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP), which consists of the following phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Learner\u2019s permit<\/li><li>Driver\u2019s education<\/li><li>Provisional license<\/li><li>Full unrestricted driver\u2019s license<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Completing the GLP program helps you build essential defensive driving skills and reduce your chances of being involved in a traffic accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-age-and-duration-requirements\">Age and Duration Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You are required to meet the following requirements BEFORE you will be eligible for each phase of the GLP:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Learner\u2019s permit<\/strong>: 16 years old<\/li><li><strong>Provisional driver\u2019s license<\/strong>: Eligible after attaining a learner\u2019s permit for 180 days<\/li><li><strong>Full unrestricted driver\u2019s license<\/strong>: Eligible after attaining an intermediate\/provisional license for 180 days<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kentucky-learner-s-permit\">Kentucky Learner\u2019s Permit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be at least 16 years old to apply for your Kentucky learner\u2019s permit. Studying the Kentucky Driver\u2019s Manual (click <a href=\"http:\/\/kentuckystatepolice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Drivers-Manual-5-27-2021-Update.pdf\">here<\/a> to download) to prepare for the Kentucky Department of Motor Vehicles (KY DMV) written test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply for your Kentucky learner\u2019s permit, you need to visit your local KY circuit court clerk\u2019s office and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Provide your original or certified birth certificate<\/li><li>If you are younger than 18 years old, you need to submit a School Compliance Verification form that is signed by your school district<\/li><li>Provide your social security card<\/li><li>Provide proof of your Kentucky residency<\/li><li>Have your parent or guardian sign your learner\u2019s permit application (legal guardians must provide a certified copy of guardianship papers)<\/li><li>Pass the written and vision tests<\/li><li>Pay the Kentucky learner\u2019s permit fee (contact your circuit court for specific fee details)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kentucky-learner-s-permit-driving-restrictions\">Kentucky Learner\u2019s Permit Driving Restrictions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While you have your Kentucky learner\u2019s permit, you are restricted to driving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Only while supervised by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old<\/li><li>Only between 6 AM and 12 AM UNLESS for an emergency, or school\/work-related purposes<\/li><li>With no more than 1 passenger who is under 20 years old UNLESS they are a family member<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-behind-the-wheel-practice\">Behind-the-Wheel Practice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Kentucky learner\u2019s permit is valid for 3 years, and you must attain this permit for at least 180 days WITHOUT any moving violations before proceeding to the next stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also need to complete 60 hours of driving practice, including 10 hours of night driving, and an approved Driver\u2019s Ed course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kentucky-provisional-license\">Kentucky Provisional License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve attained your learner\u2019s permit for at least 180 days, you can schedule an appointment to take the road skills test and apply for a provisional license. Before you can take the Kentucky driving test, you must have completed 60 hours of driving practice, which includes 10 hours of night driving, and completed a Driver\u2019s Ed course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do not pass the KY DMV road test, you are required to wait at least 7 days to retake the test. If you\u2019re under 18 years old, you must provide a School Compliance Verification form, which you can obtain from your school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can contact your KY circuit court clerk directly for more information regarding how to apply for an intermediate driver\u2019s license, including all related fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-provisional-license-restrictions-in-kentucky\">Provisional License Restrictions in Kentucky<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Drivers who are under 18 years old and attain a Kentucky intermediate driver\u2019s license are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Between the hours of 12 AM and 6 AM (except in emergencies, and for school or work-related purposes)<\/li><li>With more than 1 passenger who is unrelated and younger than 20 years old<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-full-unrestricted-kentucky-driver-s-license\">Full Unrestricted Kentucky Driver\u2019s License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are under 18 years old and have a Kentucky intermediate driver\u2019s license, you are required to complete one of the following Driver\u2019s Education programs before you can apply for your full, unrestricted Kentucky driver\u2019s license:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Graduated licensing course (offered by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet)<\/li><li>High school Driver\u2019s Ed course<\/li><li>Private driver\u2019s training course at an approved driver training school<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You are also required to complete 60 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice, including 10 hours of night driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you\u2019ve completed the above steps and attained your KY provisional license for a minimum of 180 days, you are eligible to apply for your KY driver\u2019s license. You need to visit your county circuit court clerk and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Provide proof of completion of your Driver\u2019s Ed program<\/li><li>Submit a School Compliance Verification Form that is signed by your school district (if you\u2019re younger than 18 years old)<\/li><li>Provide a Graduated Licensing Eligibility Letter<\/li><li>Provide your birth certificate, Social Security Number, and proof of Kentucky residency<\/li><li>Have your parent or guardian sign your application (if you\u2019re under 18 years old)<\/li><li>Pay the applicable KY driver\u2019s license fee(s)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kentucky-driver-s-license-restrictions\">Kentucky Driver\u2019s License Restrictions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re younger than 21 years old and recently obtained a full Kentucky driver\u2019s license, you are subject to the 0.02% blood alcohol content Zero Alcohol Tolerance law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Kentucky driver\u2019s license will be suspended if you are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Younger than 18 years old and received more than 6 points on your Kentucky driving record<\/li><li>Older than 18 years old and record 12 points on your Kentucky driving record<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-your-driver-s-license-as-a-new-resident-of-kentucky\">Getting Your Driver\u2019s License as a New Resident of Kentucky<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a driver\u2019s license from your previous state, you have a maximum of 30 days after you establish residency in Kentucky to transfer your driver\u2019s license. If you\u2019re younger than 18 years old, you must follow the \u201cNew Resident of Kentucky Under the age of 18 Years Old\u201d section listed above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be advised that you must be at least 16 years old and a US citizen (or permanent resident) to apply for a Kentucky driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To obtain a Kentucky driver\u2019s license, you must visit your local Kentucky Division of Driver\u2019s License (KY DDL) office and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Submit a completed Driver\u2019s License ID Card Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.ky.gov\/driver-licensing\/Documents\/Driver%20License%20-%20ID%20Card%20Application%20(TC%2094-30).pdf\">Form TC 94-30<\/a>)<\/li><li>Submit proof of your Kentucky residential address, such as your:<ul><li>Utility bill<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Rental agreement<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Property tax bill<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Surrender your out-of-state driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>Provide your birth certificate (if your current name is different from your birth certificate, you must present proof of your legal name change (such as a marriage certificate)<\/li><li>Provide your Social Security card<\/li><li>Provide proof of your name change (if applicable)<\/li><li>Pass the written and vision tests (if your driver\u2019s license has expired)<\/li><li>Provide your driving record or clearance record from your previous state (if your driver\u2019s license has expired for 1 year or longer)<\/li><li>Pay the required fee(s) \u2013 you can contact the KY DDL for more information<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind if your driver\u2019s license is from a country other than the US, you must pass the Kentucky vision, written, and driving tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-kentucky-written-exam-and-road-test\">The Kentucky Written Exam and Road Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Kentucky, you may be required to complete a written exam and a road test. Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-taking-the-kentucky-written-exam\">Taking the Kentucky Written Exam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kentucky written exam consists of 40 questions, 32 of which you must answer correctly to pass the exam with a minimum passing score of 80%. The minimum age to apply to take the Kentucky exam is 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-taking-the-kentucky-road-test\">Taking the Kentucky Road Test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kentucky also has a road exam that KY drivers must pass to receive their driver\u2019s license. The road exam is used to test your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle on the roads and highways of Kentucky. You will be tested on your ability to stop, reverse, parallel park, and other basic driving skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-married-divorced-or-name-change\">Married, Divorced, or Name Change?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be required to submit name change documentation in the state of Kentucky if you\u2019re applying for a new KY driver\u2019s license or identification card. Keep in mind that you may be required to provide name change documentation, such as a marriage license, to be issued a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or ID card in your true full name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the name on your identification document is different from the name you provided on your Kentucky driver\u2019s license application, you must provide a document that proves your true full name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of documents that establish your true full name can include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A certificate, declaration, or registration document that verifies the formation of a domestic partnership<\/li><li>A marriage certificate<\/li><li>A dissolution of marriage or domestic partnership document that contains the legal name as a result of the court action<\/li><li>Adoption documents that contain the legal names as a result of the adoption<\/li><li>A name change document that contains the legal name of both before and after the name change<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-the-real-id-act-impact-residents-of-kentucky\">Does the REAL ID Act Impact Residents of Kentucky?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting May 3, 2023, every person who is over 18 years old and intends on traveling by air will be required to obtain a Kentucky REAL-ID compliant driver\u2019s license, permit, identification card, or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the US, visit military bases, or enter a federal building that requires identification. REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s licenses and ID cards will have a star in a black circle in the upper-right section of the card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-obtaining-a-real-id-mandatory-in-kentucky\">Is Obtaining a REAL ID Mandatory in Kentucky?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The federally compliant REAL ID or REAL DRIVER\u2019S LICENSE is OPTIONAL. If you obtain valid documentation of the above-listed TSA documents, you can use them to pass TSA checkpoints at airport terminals nationwide. You can also use these documents to visit a secure federal building or military installation at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you will not be boarding a domestic flight or visiting a secure federal facility or military base, you are not required to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or ID card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be advised that you are not required to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or ID card to perform any of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Visit a hospital or receive life-saving services<\/li><li>Operate a motor vehicle<\/li><li>Apply for or receive federal benefits (Social Security Administration (SSA), Veteran\u2019s Affairs, etc.)<\/li><li>Vote<\/li><li>Enter a facility that does NOT require ID (such as a post office)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-standard-ky-driver-s-license-vs-a-real-id-kentucky-driver-s-license\">Standard KY Driver\u2019s License vs. a REAL ID Kentucky Driver\u2019s License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Standard Kentucky Driver\u2019s Licenses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standard Kentucky driver\u2019s license is a standard credential that is state-maintained but NOT a REAL ID-compliant card. Standard KY driver\u2019s licenses and ID cards will remain acceptable for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Age-restricted purchases<\/li><li>Driving<\/li><li>Voting<\/li><li>Accessing federal and social benefit services (VA hospitals, federal courthouses, etc.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals who currently have a Kentucky driver\u2019s license but who haven\u2019t had a name or address change must present their current license if they are applying for a standard Kentucky driver\u2019s license.
