The towing unit should have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) that is at least 10,000 lbs.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Class B (CDL) <\/strong>\u2013 with a Class B CDL, you can operate single commercial motor vehicles with a weight exceeding 26,000 lbs. If you are towing a unit, the unit\u2019s weight should NOT exceed 10,000 lbs.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Class C (CDL) \u2013 <\/strong>with a Class C CDL, you can operate single commercial vehicles that do NOT exceed 26,001 lbs. and a tow that does NOT exceed 10,000 lbs. Also, with a Class C CDL, you can operate vehicles that are designed to carry a minimum of 16 passengers and vehicles that transport hazardous materials.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kansas-driver-s-license-requirements\">Kansas Driver\u2019s License Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the state of Kansas, you are required to apply for an unrestricted KS driver\u2019s license if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You are at least 17 years old<\/li><li>You have completed a Driver\u2019s Education (Driver\u2019s Ed) course, if you are younger than 18 years old<\/li><li>You have parental consent (if you\u2019re younger than 18 years old)<\/li><li>Your driving privileges are NOT currently canceled, suspended, denied, or revoked in ANY state<\/li><li>You haven\u2019t been deemed mentally incompetent by a court<\/li><li>You don\u2019t have an alcohol or substance abuse problem<\/li><li>You are clear of unpaid fines (for moving traffic violations)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You are NOT required to obtain a Kansas driver\u2019s license if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You\u2019re at least 18 years old and visiting Kansas with a valid out-of-state driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>You are an active military member or dependent who is stationed in Kansas, as long as you have a valid out-of-state driver\u2019s license, and you haven\u2019t established residency in Kansas<\/li><li>You operate farm vehicles off public highways<\/li><li>You ONLY operate registered off-highway vehicles and snowmobiles without accessing public roads (other than crossing the roads)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-your-kansas-driver-s-license\">Applying for Your Kansas Driver\u2019s License<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply for your KS driver\u2019s license, you must apply in person at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksrevenue.gov\/\">Kansas Department of Revenue<\/a> (KS DOR) office. First, you will need to obtain your Kansas learner\u2019s permit. You can bypass some of the testing requirements if you complete a Driver\u2019s Education course. The GDL program requires teenagers to complete certain steps before obtaining their driver\u2019s license. Many of the milestones that accompany the GDL program are age-related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-age-requirements\">Age Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As stated above, there are age requirements to be eligible for different parts of the Kansas driver\u2019s license process. Driver\u2019s Ed is ONLY available through school districts that have been approved by the Kansas Department of Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-learner-s-permit\">Learner\u2019s Permit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You are eligible to apply for your learner\u2019s permit when you are 14 years old. You must still follow some age-related restrictions. If you are 16 years old, you are only allowed to drive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When you are accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old who has a valid driver\u2019s license in the front seat<\/li><li>On the most direct and accessible route between home and school for attendance<\/li><li>To and from or in connection with any job, school, or farm-related work<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During this driving phase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You must complete the remaining 25 hours of your required 50 hours of supervised driving, with 10 hours of night driving<\/li><li>You can\u2019t have any non-sibling passengers while driving<\/li><li>You can\u2019t use a cell phone to talk or text, UNLESS it is to report illegal activity or to receive emergency help<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While you attain your restricted driver\u2019s license, you are required to complete an additional 25 hours of driving, with 10 of the 50 hours driven at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-less-restricted-provisional-license\">Less Restricted Provisional License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After you turn 18 years old, some of the restrictions will be removed from your license. With a less restricted license, you are only permitted to operate a motor vehicle ONLY:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Between 5 AM and 9 PM<\/li><li>To and from work, school, or a farm-related purpose<\/li><li>To and from a religious worship service held by a religious organization<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During this phase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>One non-sibling passenger under 18 years old is allowed<\/li><li>You are forbidden from texting or talking on a cell phone while driving UNLESS it is an emergency<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kansas-unrestricted-driver-s-license\">Kansas Unrestricted Driver\u2019s License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are 17 years old and had your restricted license for 6 months, you will be eligible for an unrestricted driver\u2019s license. If you\u2019re between 14 and 17 years old, and you live or are employed on a farm (parcel of land that is larger than 20 acres used in agricultural operations), you need to visit your local KS DMV office and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Provide proper identification<\/li><li>Have parental approval (if you\u2019re under 16 years old, the application must be signed by your parent or guardian)<\/li><li>Provide a completed Farm Affidavit (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksrevenue.gov\/pdf\/teen_driving_log.pdf\">Form DE-IB01<\/a>)<\/li><li>Pass the written test (not required if you completed a Driver\u2019s Ed class)<\/li><li>Pass the road test (you are exempt if you completed a state-approved Driver\u2019s Ed course)<\/li><li>Pass the vision test<\/li><li>Pay the $10 license fee, plus the $11 fee for photo and testing<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you obtain your farm permit, you are eligible to drive under the following age-related conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>14 and 15 Years Old<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To and from any farm-related work<\/li><li>To and from school (you must follow the most direct and accessible route)<\/li><li>When accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old and has a valid driver\u2019s license<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While driving, you are NOT allowed to have any non-sibling passengers, and you can\u2019t talk or text on a cell phone UNLESS it\u2019s an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>16 Years Old<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this time, you are allowed to drive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Between the hours of 5 AM and 9 PM<\/li><li>To and from work<\/li><li>To and from authorized school or religious activities<\/li><li>ONLY when you\u2019re accompanied in the front seat by an adult who is at least 21 years old who attains a valid driver\u2019s license<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The restrictions in this situation include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You can drive with ONLY 1 passenger who is outside your family who is under 18 years old<\/li><li>You are forbidden from texting or talking on a cell phone while driving UNLESS it\u2019s an emergency<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-your-driver-s-license-as-a-new-resident-of-kansas\">Getting Your Driver\u2019s License as a New Resident of Kansas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a new resident of Kansas, welcome! Depending on if you have an out-of-state driver\u2019s license, you may have some driving exams waived. If you have a valid driver\u2019s license, your driving and written tests will be waived. Some larger vehicles, such as farm equipment and RVs fall into the non-commercial vehicle category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kansas DOR may require you to obtain a license or endorsement other than your regular Kansas driver\u2019s license if you plan on operating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Heavy-weight vehicles<\/li><li>Vehicles that are designed to carry a large number of people<\/li><li>Vehicles that transport hazardous materials.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-needs-a-cdl-in-kansas\">Who Needs a CDL in Kansas?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you think of a CDL, you may think of cross-country truck drivers. However, some shuttle drivers and school bus drivers are required to obtain a CDL plus an endorsement. For more information, you can view the CDL manual by clicking here, or contacting the licensing exam station by calling (785) 296-3671.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shuttles-and-large-passenger-buses\">Shuttles and Large Passenger Buses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To operate a bus that transports 16 or more passengers (including yourself as the driver), you must obtain a valid Kansas commercial driver\u2019s license (CDL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A KS CDL is a Class C commercial license that allows you to operate any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles that are either:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Designed to transport 16 passengers or more<\/li><li>Placarded for hazardous materials<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You are also required to have all applicable endorsements, including the \u201cP\u201d endorsement that requires additional written exams and skills testing that allows you to transport passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-married-divorced-or-name-change\">Married, Divorced, or Name Change?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have to provide a name change document in the state of Kansas if you\u2019re applying for a new KS driver\u2019s license or identification card. You may be required to submit a name change document(s), such as a marriage license, to be issued a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or ID card in your true full name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the name on your identification document is different from the name you provided on your application, you must submit a document that establishes your true full name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of documents that establish your true full name can include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Adoption documents that contain the legal names as a result of the adoption<\/li><li>A name change document that contains the legal name of both before and after the name change<\/li><li>A marriage certificate<\/li><li>A certificate, declaration, or registration document that verifies the formation of a domestic partnership<\/li><li>A dissolution of marriage or domestic partnership document that contains the legal name as a result of the court action<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-the-real-id-act-impact-residents-of-kansas\">Does the REAL ID Act Impact Residents of Kansas?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting May 3, 2023, individuals who are at least 18 years old will need a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the US. In addition, a REAL ID will be required to enter federal facilities where identification is currently required for entry. You may also use a non-photo ID IF it includes your full name AND your birth date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kansas-clp-restrictions\">Kansas CLP Restrictions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a commercial learner\u2019s permit restricts you from doing certain things while on the road. You must attain your CLP for a certain time before you will be eligible to take the skills test to receive your full commercial driver\u2019s license. Federally, the waiting period is at least 14 days, but your waiting time may be different. Other fees may apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-registering-and-titling-your-out-of-state-motorcycle\">Registering and Titling Your Out-of-State Motorcycle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you bring a motorcycle to the state of Kansas, it must be titled and registered within 90 days of establishing residency, which must be completed whether you are physically in the state of Kansas or if the vehicle itself is in the state. You will need proof of a valid insurance policy to register your vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-get-a-kansas-motorcycle-permit-class-m\">How to Get a Kansas Motorcycle Permit (Class M)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be at least 14 years old to apply for a motorcycle instruction permit in the state of Kansas. This motorcycle permit is valid for 1 year. You may be required to pay additional fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-less-restricted-class-m-license-for-minor-drivers\">Less Restricted Class M License for Minor Drivers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Less restricted Class M licenses are available for drivers who are 16 years old and do not yet qualify for a non-restricted motorcycle license. A non-restricted motorcycle license is available to drivers who are at least 17 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To receive a less restricted license, you are required to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be 16 years old (not yet 17 years old)<\/li><li>Have had an instruction permit for at least 1 year<ul><li>While attaining your motorcycle permit, you must have completed at least 50 hours of driving under adult supervision with a licensed adult who is at least 21 years old. 10 of the 50 hours must be driven at night.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Pass both a written and driving skills test OR present a Certificate of Completion from an approved motorcycle driver\u2019s education course. However, some courses may require additional classroom hours.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You must carry your restricted motorcycle license for at least 6 months and submit an affidavit that proves that all 50 hours of supervised driving have been completed to receive your non-restricted motorcycle license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the above-stated conditions are NOT met, the restrictions placed on your motorcycle license will remain until you turn 17 years old, OR you provide the affidavit, depending on which comes first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-less-restricted-license-driving-requirements\">Less Restricted License Driving Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With a Kansas less restricted motorcycle license, you must adhere to the below restrictions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You may only operate a motorcycle to and from work, or authorized school activities<\/li><li>You may only operate a motorcycle between the hours of 5 AM and 9 PM, or when you are accompanied by a licensed adult driver who is at least 21 years old (outside of designated hours)<\/li><li>You may NOT carry more than one non-sibling passenger under 18 years old<\/li><li>You are not allowed to use ANY wireless communication device while driving UNLESS it is an emergency.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-receive-a-kansas-motorcycle-endorsement-class-m\">How to Receive a Kansas Motorcycle Endorsement (Class M)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be at least 17 years old and have a valid Kansas driver\u2019s license BEFORE applying for a motorcycle endorsement. The on-cycle driving skills test takes place in traffic or a controlled area off the street and is based on maneuvers that are discussed in the Kansas motorcycle manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Motorcycle Driver\u2019s Education courses are generally based on the Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses but may include additional mandatory hours\/curriculum. If you complete and pass a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course, you will be exempt from taking the on-cycle skills test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are 17 years old, you are required to submit a Teen Driving Experience Affidavit (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksrevenue.gov\/pdf\/teen_driving_log.pdf\">Form DE-IB01<\/a>) that you\u2019ve completed 50 hours of supervised driving to receive your Kansas motorcycle license. This rule does NOT apply to applicants who are at least 18 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kansas-motorcycle-license-fees\">Kansas Motorcycle License Fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Class M fees are in addition to the standard Kansas license fees.
