With this license, you can operate traditional, non-commercial, passenger cars and trucks.<\/li><li><strong>Non-Commercial Class M Driver\u2019s License<\/strong> \u2013 this license allows you to operate a motorcycle or motor-driven cycles, such as a scooter or moped.<\/li><li><strong>Commercial Driver\u2019s Licenses (CDL)<\/strong><ul><li><strong>Class A<\/strong> \u2013 required to operate a combination vehicle, such as a truck and a trailer with a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of at least 26,001 lbs.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Class B<\/strong> \u2013 required to operate a single motor vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of at least 26,001 lbs.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Class C<\/strong> \u2013 required to operate a vehicle that transports materials that are considered hazardous by federal law<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arizona-driver-s-license-requirements\">Arizona Driver\u2019s License Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you visit your local <a href=\"https:\/\/azdot.gov\/\">Arizona Department of Transportation<\/a> (AZ DOT) office, you need to determine whether you are required to apply for a new AZ driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are required to have an Arizona driver\u2019s license if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You are a current resident of Arizona who has never obtained a driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>You are a new resident of Arizona and want to apply for an AZ driver\u2019s license or transfer your out-of-state driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>You intend on operating any non-commercial, CDL, or traditional vehicles described above<\/li><li>You have legal presence in the state of Arizona and the United States (you are not required to obtain an AZ driver\u2019s license if you possess a diplomatic driver\u2019s license that has been issued by the U.S. Department of State)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You are not required to obtain an Arizona driver\u2019s license if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You\u2019re at least 18 years old and visiting Arizona with a valid out-of-state driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>You\u2019re an active military member or dependent who is stationed in Arizona, as long as you have a valid out-of-state driver\u2019s license, and you haven\u2019t established residency in Arizona<\/li><li>You operate farm vehicles off public highways<\/li><li>You ONLY operate registered off-highway vehicles and snowmobiles without accessing public roads (other than crossing public roads)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-your-arizona-driver-s-license\">Applying for Your Arizona Driver\u2019s License<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The state of Arizona does not require adult applicants to obtain a permit before applying. The Arizona Motor Vehicle Department (AZ MVD) allows you to start the license application process online, which allows you to:<ul><li>Complete the application<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Determine your ID requirements<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Print your completed package<ul><li>You must bring the completed paperwork with you to the AZ MVD or authorized third-party office to receive your license<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The information you submit online will be transferred electronically to the MVD and stored for when you visit your local AZ MVD office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To complete your new AZ driver\u2019s license application process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Submit your completed license application (Form 40-5122)<\/li><li>Surrender your out-of-state license (if you\u2019re a new resident)<\/li><li>For a federally approved Voluntary Travel ID driver\u2019s license, you must present original or certified copies in English from the list of acceptable documents found <a href=\"https:\/\/azdot.gov\/node\/5126\">here<\/a>. Once you\u2019ve passed the AZ written test, you will be issued your graduated instruction permit and allowed to start your behind-the-wheel practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-get-an-arizona-graduated-driver-s-license\">How to Get an Arizona Graduated Driver\u2019s License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are at least 16 years old and have attained your learner\u2019s permit for at least 6 months, you are eligible to earn your Class G provisional license. You will be allowed to apply for an AZ operator\u2019s license once you turn 18 years old, but you are not required to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-provisional-driver-s-license-restrictions\">Provisional Driver\u2019s License Restrictions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With your graduated driver\u2019s license, you need to know about the following driving restrictions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You are NOT allowed to drive with more than 1 passenger who is under 18 years old, unless they are your siblings, or you are driving with your parent or legal guardian in the front seat.<\/li><li>For the first 6 months, you have your license, you are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle between midnight and 5 AM unless you are driving with your parent or legal guardian in the front seat or you are driving to or from work, church, school, or because of a family emergency.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After the first 6 months, as long as you have NOT received any traffic violations or license suspensions, these restrictions will be lifted, and you can operate a motor vehicle without restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-your-official-class-d-arizona-driver-s-license\">Applying for Your Official Class D Arizona Driver\u2019s License<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you turn 18 years old, you are eligible to apply for an Arizona Class D driver\u2019s license. Box 2100<br>MD 510<br>Phoenix, AZ 85001<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-getting-your-driver-s-license-as-a-new-resident-of-arizona\">Getting Your Driver\u2019s License as a New Resident of Arizona<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you establish residency in the state of Arizona, you must get an Arizona driver\u2019s license and register your vehicle(s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state of Arizona considers you a resident when ANY of the following situations apply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You work in Arizona (this does NOT apply to seasonal farm workers)<\/li><li>You\u2019re registered to vote in Arizona<\/li><li>Your children go to an Arizona school and the tuition rate reflects that of a resident<\/li><li>Your business operates in Arizona and operates vehicles in the state<\/li><li>You have a business that uses vehicles as transport for goods or passengers in Arizona<\/li><li>You live in Arizona for 7 months or more during a calendar year (regardless of whether you claim Arizona as your permanent residence)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are an active-duty military member who is based in AZ and you qualify for the exemption by the Service Members Civil Relief Act of 2003, you are NOT an AZ resident and do not need to apply for a driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-arizona-written-exam-and-road-test\">The Arizona Written Exam and Road Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-taking-the-arizona-written-exam\">Taking the Arizona Written Exam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The written exam for the state of Arizona consists of 30 questions, 24 of which you must answer correctly to pass with a minimum passing score of 80%. The minimum age to apply to complete the AZ written exam is 15 \u00bd years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-taking-the-arizona-road-test\">Taking the Arizona Road Test<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arizona road test is used to determine how safely you operate a motor vehicle on the highways and roadways of Arizona. You will be tested on parking, using your turn signals, maintaining your speed, stopping, and other basic driving maneuvers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-non-commercial-driver-s-licenses-in-arizona\">Non-Commercial Driver\u2019s Licenses in Arizona<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a graduated driver\u2019s license (Class G) and a motorcycle license (Class M) in the state of Arizona. Applying for either type of license in this state is similar to applying for the standard Class D driver\u2019s license in Arizona, even if you wish to upgrade your Class G driver\u2019s license or add or motorcycle endorsement to your license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-married-divorced-or-name-change\">Married, Divorced, or Name Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may need to provide name change documents if you\u2019re applying for a new AZ driver\u2019s license or identification card. Keep in mind that you may be required to submit documents that include a marriage license, to be issued a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or ID card in your true full name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the name on your identification document is different from the name you provided on your application, you must submit a document that establishes your true full name, which can include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A marriage certificate<\/li><li>Adoption documents that contain the legal names as a result of the adoption<\/li><li>A name change document that contains the legal name of both before and after the name change<\/li><li>A certificate, declaration, or registration document that verifies the formation of a domestic partnership<\/li><li>A dissolution of marriage\/domestic partnership document that contains the legal name as a result of the court action<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-the-real-id-act-impact-residents-of-arizona\">Does the REAL ID Act Impact Residents of Arizona?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting May 3, 2023, ONLY the Arizona Travel ID (driver\u2019s license or ID card), a U.S. passport, and other federally approved identification will be accepted at TSA airport security checkpoints for domestic travel. The fee for obtaining an AZ Travel ID is $25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-obtaining-a-real-id-mandatory-in-arizona\">Is Obtaining a REAL ID Mandatory in Arizona?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Obtaining a REAL ID is not mandatory for Arizona drivers or residents. Travel IDs require more documentation than a standard Arizona driver\u2019s license or ID.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-you-prepare-to-apply-for-a-real-id-card\">How Do You Prepare to Apply for a REAL ID Card?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To obtain your Travel ID for the first time, you must visit your local AZ MVD office and present the following documentation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Proof of identity<\/strong><ul><li>Birth certificate<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Passport<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Certificate of Naturalization or citizenship<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Permanent resident card<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Proof of name change<\/strong> (if your current name is different from the name provided on your identity document)<ul><li>Marriage certificate<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Divorce decree<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Adoption decree<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Court-issued proof of legal name change<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Proof of social security number<\/strong><ul><li>Social security card<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>1099 or a W-2 tax form<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Proof of residency<\/strong> (2 documents are required)<ul><li>Business<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Tribal agency<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Government agency<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Organization<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Payment for the $25 REAL ID fee<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You are not required to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver\u2019s license or ID card to perform any of the following actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Operate a motor vehicle<\/li><li>Vote<\/li><li>Apply for or receive federal benefits (Social Security Administration (SSA), Veterans Affairs, etc.)<\/li><li>Visit a hospital or receive life-saving services<\/li><li>Enter a federal facility that does not require ID (such as a post office)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-a-commercial-driver-s-license-in-arizona\">Applying for a Commercial Driver\u2019s License in Arizona<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To operate certain types of vehicles in the state of Arizona, you must obtain a commercial driver\u2019s license (CDL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will require a CDL if you intend on operating a vehicle that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Has a truck and trailer with a combined weight of over 26,001 lbs. (<strong>Class A CDL<\/strong>)<\/li><li>Has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) that exceeds 26,001 lbs. (<strong>Class B CDL<\/strong>)<\/li><li>Has a GVWR of 26,000 lbs. or less, IF it is designed to transport at least 16 passengers, including the driver (<strong>Class C CDL<\/strong>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply for your Arizona CDL, you are required to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be at least 21 years old (18 years old to drive within Arizona ONLY)<\/li><li>Submit a Medical Examiner Certificate or DOT medical card<\/li><li>Provide proof of:<ul><li>Your legal U.S. presence<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Age<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Identity<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Social security number<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Residency<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-can-get-an-arizona-cdl\">Who Can Get an Arizona CDL?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To be eligible for an AZ CDL, you must meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Must be at least 18 years old<\/li><li>Provide proof that you have at least 1 year of driving experience (can\u2019t be on a motorcycle)<ul><li>AZ residents can use their AZ driver\u2019s license as proof<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Out-of-state licenses will be acceptable IF they were issued more than 1 year before you apply<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re applying for Arizona CDL with an out-of-state license, you may also prove your driving experience with a motor vehicle record that is issued by your home state, which is under 30 days old and shows at least 1 year of driving experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants who are under 21 years old will be restricted to driving commercial vehicles within Arizona, and will not be permitted to transport hazardous materials, per MVD and FMCSA regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arizona-commercial-learner-s-permit\">Arizona Commercial Learner\u2019s Permit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you can receive your Arizona commercial driver\u2019s license, you must obtain your commercial learner\u2019s permit (CLP). Although it\u2019s not required by the Arizona MVD or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), it is recommended that you enroll in a commercial driver\u2019s education course to help you prepare for the exams you are required to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re ready, schedule an appointment with your local AZ MVD office and bring the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The proper medical paperwork<\/li><li>A completed Commercial Driver\u2019s License Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azdot.gov\/files\/mvd\/mvd-forms-lib\/40-5124.pdf\">Form 40-5124<\/a>)<\/li><li>Social security card<\/li><li>Valid driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>Proof of:<ul><li>Identity<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>U.S. citizenship\/lawful permanent status<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Arizona residency<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Driving experience<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The appropriate fee for your CLP class<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-acceptable-identity-citizenship-and-arizona-residency-documents\">Acceptable Identity, Citizenship, and Arizona Residency Documents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proof of Identity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state of Arizona requires at least 2 documents to prove your identity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>At least 1 document must include a photo of you<\/li><li>At least 1 document must be considered a \u201cprimary\u201d document and include your date of birth, such as:<ul><li>U.S. passport<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Arizona ID card<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>W-2 form<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azdot.gov\/files\/mvd\/mvd-forms-lib\/96-0526.pdf\">here<\/a> for a list of acceptable documentation in the state of Arizona. In lieu of photo documents, you can provide 3 documents to prove your identity and citizenship\/lawful status, all other requirements above still apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proof of Citizenship<br><\/strong>Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent status in Arizona requires at least 2 documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>At least 1 document must include a photo of you<\/li><li>You will need 1 document considered a \u201cprimary\u201d source and 1 document as a \u201csecondary\u201d source. All other listed requirement above still applies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proof of Residency<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proof of Arizona residency requires 2 documents that show BOTH your name and physical address. A few examples of proof of your Arizona residency include your:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Valid Arizona driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>Voter registration card<\/li><li>Utility bill (dated)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azdot.gov\/files\/mvd\/mvd-forms-lib\/96-0526.pdf\">here<\/a> for a list of acceptable documentation as proof of your Arizona residency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-additional-clp-requirements-in-arizona\">Additional CLP Requirements in Arizona<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from providing the required documentation and paying the necessary fee(s), you must pass all appropriate written exams for the type of CDL you want with a passing score of at least 80% and submit to a driving record check. After completing the process, the Arizona MVD will issue your commercial learner\u2019s permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-clp-restrictions-in-arizona\">CLP Restrictions in Arizona<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Arizona CLP is valid for 6 months. You must wait at least 14 days before you can take the skills test needed to obtain your full commercial driver\u2019s license. The FMCSA restricts all CLP drivers to practice only while accompanied by a full CDL holder on public roads ONLY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arizona-commercial-driver-s-licenses\">Arizona Commercial Driver\u2019s Licenses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve had your Arizona CLP for at least 14 days, you are allowed to take your CDL skills test. You must schedule an appointment at your local AZ MVD branch or find a third party that offers skills testing in Arizona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must bring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your commercial learner\u2019s permit (CLP)<\/li><li>Your Arizona driver\u2019s license<\/li><li>The appropriate fee(s)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you fail any part of your skills test, you must wait 2 business days before you can retake the exam. Once you pass and pay the applicable fees, you will receive your AZ CDL. Your Arizona CDL is valid for 8 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transferring-your-cdl-to-arizona\">Transferring Your CDL to Arizona<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve moved to Arizona and want to transfer your out-of-state CDL, you must do so within 30 days of establishing residency in Arizona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schedule an appointment with your local AZ MVD office and present the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Medical Examiner Certificate or ADOT card<\/li><li>Social security card<\/li><li>Current, valid commercial driver\u2019s license from your previous state<\/li><li>Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent status<\/li><li>Payment for all applicable fees<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have provided the above-listed documentation and payment, the AZ MVD will issue your new Arizona commercial driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cdl-fees-in-arizona\">CDL Fees in Arizona<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arizona MVD currently charges the following for CDLs and related services:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Commercial learner\u2019s permits<\/strong>:<ul><li>Class A or Class B: $25<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Class C: $12.50<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Endorsements<\/strong>: $10 EACH (school bus endorsements are <strong>free<\/strong>)<\/li><li><strong>Road and Skills Tests Fees<\/strong>:<ul><li>Class A or Class B: $25<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Class C: $12.50<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>New or transferred CDLs<\/strong>:<ul><li>Class A or Class B: $25<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Class C: $12.50<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Duplicate CDL<\/strong>: $12<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arizona-cdl-medical-requirements-and-waivers\">Arizona CDL Medical Requirements and Waivers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Medical Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All AZ commercial driver\u2019s license applicants are required to either acquire certain medical certifications before applying for their learner\u2019s permits or submit a waiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AZ MVD requires a completed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Medical Examination Report Form (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/sites\/fmcsa.dot.gov\/files\/docs\/MedicalExaminationReportFormMCSA5875.pdf\">Form MCSA-5875<\/a>)<\/li><li>Medical Examiner\u2019s Certificate (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/sites\/fmcsa.dot.gov\/files\/docs\/regulations\/medical\/63066\/medicalexaminerscertificateformmcsa5876093019.pdf\">Form MCSA-5876<\/a>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be advised that the above-listed forms must be completed by an FMCSA-approved physician. You may also be required to endure the self-certification process. During this process, you will declare to the state the type of driving you intend on doing with your CDL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019re deemed physically fit, you will be given a Medical Examiner Certificate. You can submit your certificate to the AZ Medical Review program by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Email \u2013 scan your certificate and email it to the MVD (<a href=\"mailto:medicalreview@azdot.gov\">medicalreview@azdot.gov<\/a>)<\/li><li>Fax \u2013 send your certificate to (602) 239-6288<\/li><li>Mail \u2013 mail your certificate to:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Medical Review Program<\/strong><br>P.O. Boz 2100, Mail Drop 818Z<br>Phoenix, AZ 85007<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must keep a copy of this document with you while operating a commercial motor vehicle. You can check the status of your Medical Examiner Certificate online <a href=\"https:\/\/azdot.gov\/motor-vehicles\/driver-services\/commercial-driver-license\/medical-certification-cdl\">here<\/a>. You must wait at least 10 days for your certificate to be processed before checking the standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must renew your Medical Examiner Certificate every 2 years. However, the medical examiner can set the expiration date of this certificate sooner based on certain medical conditions. The AZ MVD will send you a reminder 45 days before your certificate expires. If you have questions or concerns, contact the Medical Review service line Monday \u2013 Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM at (602) 771-2460.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Medical Waivers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state and the federal government both have medical waivers that are available for certain medical conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arizona MVD allows intrastate drivers to apply for a:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Vision waiver<\/li><li>Limb amputation or impairment waiver<\/li><li>Diabetes waiver<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the waiver you want to obtain, you must provide a(n):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Completed Intrastate Waiver Application (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azdot.gov\/files\/mvd\/mvd-forms-lib\/96-0544.pdf\">Form 96-0544<\/a>)<\/li><li>Current Department of Transportation Medical Examination Report (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/sites\/fmcsa.dot.gov\/files\/docs\/regulations\/medical\/63061\/medicalexaminationreportform091616mcsa5875093019.pdf\">Form MCSA-5875<\/a>)<\/li><li>Up-to-date Medical Examiner Certificate (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmcsa.dot.gov\/sites\/fmcsa.dot.gov\/files\/docs\/regulations\/medical\/63066\/medicalexaminerscertificateformmcsa5876093019.pdf\">Form MCSA-5876<\/a>) \u2013 must be completed by a medical professional, and this certificate must state the type of waiver you require.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be advised that each waiver has additional paperwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arizona-vision-waiver\">Arizona Vision Waiver<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are issued a vision waiver for your Arizona CDL, you will be restricted from driving passengers and hazardous materials. To be eligible, you are required to drive the vehicle you\u2019re listing in the waiver for no less than 2 years out of the 5 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To apply for a vision waiver, you must visit a CDL office and submit the documents listed in the medical waivers section above, as well as a Vision Examination Report (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azdot.gov\/files\/mvd\/mvd-forms-lib\/32-4001.pdf\">Form 32-4001<\/a>), which must be completed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cdl-classes-endorsements-restrictions\">CDL Classes, Endorsements &amp; Restrictions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arizona CDL Classifications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FMCSA has established several different classifications of commercial driver\u2019s licenses. Each classification allows you to operate different types of commercial vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The categories include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Class A CDL<\/strong> \u2013 allows you to operate a combination of vehicles over a certain weight, such as a tractor-trailer<\/li><li><strong>Class B CDL<\/strong> \u2013 allows you to operate a single vehicle over a certain weight, such as a straight truck<\/li><li><strong>Class C CDL<\/strong> \u2013 covers all other types of commercial vehicles over a certain weight not addressed by a Class A or Class B CDLs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The type of CDL you apply for can dictate the type of skills and written exams you are required to take or how much your permit license will cost. In the state of Arizona, a Class C commercial driver\u2019s license may only be obtained in conjunction with a passenger or HAZMAT vehicle endorsement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arizona-cdl-endorsements-and-restrictions\">Arizona CDL Endorsements and Restrictions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An endorsement is an additional accreditation on your CDL that allows you to operate a greater number of vehicles. You can obtain an endorsement by taking extra exams, both written and skill-related, and paying the additional fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the AZ Motor Vehicle Division offer endorsements that will allow you to operate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Passenger vehicles or school buses<\/li><li>Double or triple trailers<\/li><li>HAZMAT vehicles<\/li><li>Tanks<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also have a restriction placed on your commercial driver\u2019s license, which would limit the number of vehicles you\u2019re permitted to drive. You might receive a restriction on your CDL if you can\u2019t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Operate a full air brake system<\/li><li>Drive a manual transmission vehicle<\/li><li>Take your driving test in the appropriate class of vehicle<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Restrictions can generally be removed from a CDL if you take additional tests and or pay extra fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-federal-self-certification-requirements\">Federal Self-Certification Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You are required to self-certify your type of vehicle operating with the AZ MVD, which means you must self-certify one of the following driving categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Non-excepted interstate<\/li><li>Excepted interstate<\/li><li>Non-excepted intrastate<\/li><li>Excepted intrastate<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-an-arizona-motorcycle-license\">Applying for an Arizona Motorcycle License<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a new applicant from out-of-state and you have a valid motorcycle license or endorsement, you can trade in your out-of-state license for an AZ motorcycle license. You will not be required to take the driver\u2019s education or driving practice, and you will not need to follow the instruction permit requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the state that issued your license has similar skills tests to that of Arizona, you may also be exempt from the skills test. However, it\u2019s best if you prepare to take it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-obtaining-your-motorcycle-instruction-permit-in-arizona\">Obtaining Your Motorcycle Instruction Permit in Arizona<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are under the age of 18, you must obtain an instruction permit before you can receive your Class M license. To apply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You must be at least 16 years and 6 months<\/li><li>You will need to apply at your local MVD office<\/li><li>Pass a vision screening<\/li><li>Pass a written test consisting of questions from the Motorcycle Operator\u2019s Manual (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azdot.gov\/files\/mvd\/mvd-forms-lib\/99-0129.pdf\">99-0129<\/a>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do not have a current Class D driver\u2019s license or instruction permit, you will also be required to take a written driver\u2019s licensing exam and pay the $7 permit fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Arizona motorcycle permit is valid for 7 months and can be renewed 1 time within a 24-month period. During this time, you will be required to complete either an MVD-approved motorcycle training course or at least 30 hours of riding practice in order to receive your full Class M motorcycle license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-instruction-permit-restrictions\">Instruction Permit Restrictions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different restrictions to a motorcycle permit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You can\u2019t carry passengers<\/li><li>You can\u2019t drive on freeways or interstate highways<\/li><li>You can\u2019t drive between sunset and sunrise, or at any time when there is not enough light to see other vehicles or persons from a distance of 500 ft.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-a-motorcycle-license\">Applying for a Motorcycle License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a full AZ motorcycle license. If you are under 18 years old, you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Obtain a valid Arizona motorcycle instruction permit for at least 6 months<\/li><li>Complete any MVD-approved motorcycle driver\u2019s education program or have your parent or legal guardian certify in writing that you have completed at least 30 hours of practice on your motorcycle.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All applicants are required to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pass a knowledge test<\/li><li>Pass an on-cycle skills test<\/li><li>Pass a vision exam<\/li><li>Pay the licensing fee (based on your age)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you pass both exams, you will be issued your Class M license, which is valid until you turn 50 years old. You must retake your vision exam every 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applying-for-an-arizona-motorcycle-endorsement\">Applying for an Arizona Motorcycle Endorsement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your Class M license is combined with any other type of driver\u2019s license in the state of Arizona, it is referred to as an endorsement, which is added to the back of your current AZ driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Under the Age of 18<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re younger than 18 years old, a first-time driver in the state of Arizona, and you want to obtain a motorcycle endorsement, which will be added to another class of license, you will be required to meet the Arizona GDL program requirements. You must also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be at least 16 years old<\/li><li>Hold a valid Class G driver\u2019s license or instruction permit, and an Arizona motorcycle instruction permit for at least 6 months<\/li><li>Complete any MVD-approved motorcycle driver\u2019s education program, or have your parent or legal guardian certify in writing that you have completed at least 30 hours of practice driving on your motorcycle<\/li><li>Pass a written knowledge exam<\/li><li>Pass an on-cycle skills test<\/li><li>Pass a vision exam<\/li><li>Pay the $7 endorsement fee<\/li><li>Pay the licensing fee (if you are earning your Class G license for the first time)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Over the Age of 18<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re over the age of 18, you can apply for the regular Arizona Class D driver\u2019s license with a motorcycle endorsement. The Class D driver\u2019s license that features a motorcycle endorsement allows you to operate any vehicle that does not require a commercial license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pass a knowledge test<\/li><li>Pass an on-cycle skills test<\/li><li>Pass a vision exam<\/li><li>Pay the $7 endorsement fee<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-class-j-motorcycle-license\">Class J Motorcycle License<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your motorcycle has less than 100 ccs, your license will be a restricted J license, and you are not permitted to drive on interstate highways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-arizona-motorcycle-license-fees\">Arizona Motorcycle License Fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Licensing fees are based on your age and type:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>16 to 39 years old: $25<\/li><li>40 to 44 years old: $20<\/li><li>45 to 49 years old: $15<\/li><li>50 years and older: $10<\/li><li>Motorcycle endorsement: $7<\/li><li>Instruction permit: $7<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-arizona-on-cycle-skills-exam\">The Arizona On-Cycle Skills Exam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To earn your license or endorsement, you must prove your riding skills on your motorcycle by taking a driving skills exam. You can prepare for this skills exam by reading the Arizona Motorcycle Operator\u2019s Manual (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.azdot.gov\/files\/mvd\/mvd-forms-lib\/99-0129.pdf\">99-0129<\/a>). Make sure you get plenty of rest and practice before taking the exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must demonstrate basic control skills, safety measures, and understanding of your vehicle\u2019s operating maneuvers.
