If an Odometer Disclosure Statement isn\u2019t present on the vehicle\u2019s title, you need to submit a separate Odometer Disclosure Statement (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowataxandtags.org\/media\/1152\/411077-odometer-disclosure-statement1.pdf\">Form 411077<\/a>).<\/li><li>Complete a bill of sale with the buyer (it\u2019s a good idea to have this document notarized)<\/li><li>Provide the vehicle\u2019s buyer with the name of the county where the vehicle was last registered in addition to the date the license plates expire<\/li><li>Complete a Notice of Sale of Vehicle and Delivery of Title (<a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.seamlessdocs.com\/f\/NoticeofSaleofVehicleampDeliveryofTitle\">Form 4111107<\/a>) and submit it to your local IA county treasurer\u2019s office (the Delivery of Title form certifies the transfer\/delivery of your vehicle title and vehicle to the purchaser)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you choose to sell your vehicle to an individual who is out of state, you need to provide the following documentation separately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A completed Odometer Disclosure Statement (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowataxandtags.org\/media\/1152\/411077-odometer-disclosure-statement1.pdf\">Form 411077<\/a>)<\/li><li>A completed Damage Disclosure Statement (<a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.seamlessdocs.com\/f\/CO19101000127082993\">Form 411108<\/a>) if required<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you purchase another vehicle within 30 days, you can transfer your current license plates to your new vehicle. If there is a lien on the <br>vehicle, the lien holder must also sign the vehicle\u2019s title.<\/li><li>Obtain a bill of sale from the vehicle\u2019s seller<\/li><li>Complete an Application for Certificate of Title and\/or Registration (<a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.seamlessdocs.com\/f\/ApplforCertificateofTitleandorRegforaVehicle\">Form 411007<\/a>)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the above-mentioned documents and payment for the vehicle title transfer and registration fees to your local IA DOT office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the state of Iowa, you are able to drive your vehicle for up to 30 days without license plates if you carry either a signed and dated bill of sale or the vehicle\u2019s title assigned to you in your name. A photocopy of both sides of the vehicle\u2019s title is also an acceptable document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-transfer-a-car-title-when-the-owner-is-deceased\"><a><\/a>How to Transfer a Car Title When the Owner is Deceased?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An Iowa vehicle title transfer is required when the owner of the vehicle passes away if you intend on keeping, gifting, or selling the vehicle. The Probate Court will determine how to distribute the deceased individual\u2019s belongings based on their will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the vehicle is part of a probated estate, you need to follow these steps to correctly transfer the vehicle title of a deceased individual:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-contact-probate-court-and-attorney\">Contact Probate Court and Attorney<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Until the probate process is complete, the vehicle\u2019s title can\u2019t be transferred. The executor or administrator of the deceased individual needs to contact Probate Court or an attorney to receive further instructions on how to proceed. When the probate process is complete, the heir will be given the vehicle. You have 30 days to complete this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-can-i-gift-a-car-to-a-family-member\"><a><\/a>Can I Gift a Car to a Family Member?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can gift a vehicle to a family in the state of Iowa. Depending on the circumstances, the recipient of the vehicle may be exempt from paying the taxes associated with the vehicle, as well as the one-time registration fees.
